Music: New Club in Los Angeles: Electro: Chaos

Posted on Patreon: Jul 20 at 5:00pm
Club Chaos is an alternative music club that opened on 7·18·17. The club plays Witch House +, because they like their music dark. This was an opening about 4 years in the making. CTRL, one of the people behind Chaos, moved down to OC for a few years & the the pause button was pressed on Chaos. CTRL moved back to LA a few months ago, & here, now, is Chaos. Chaos is a collective.

The club features music that is Dark Electro, Dark Step, Darkcore, Dark Cabaret, Dark Wave, Dark Ambient, Dark Folk, Dark Psytrance, Dark EBM, Dark Techno. This is not a club to be pigeonholed as goth or industrial. There is more to dark electro than just industrial & it is delightful that there is now a club that showcased this in L.A.

Chaos opened with the play mix of DJI. DJI wore 3 layers of clothing and a mask. The gender and physical form of the conduit of distribution don’t matter, according to DJI because “I am not the artist who created the music.”

“This music makes me happy & I want others to feel happy as well.” -DJI

Fanfiction

Published on Patreon on: Jul 19 at 7:30pm
Fanfiction is something written by fans for fans. Imagine reading the story you enjoyed with slightly altered characters or the same characters in different situations.

There are many ways to find good fanfiction. The first thing you want to do is pick a type. There are 9 types of basic fanfiction to choose from. Then there are 9 cross over options for the same 9 types, giving you 18 types. Now, of those 18 types, you will find that you have yet to pick two different “universes” to crossover. A crossover example would be “Harry Potter * Stargate.” This would be either film Harry Potter universe and t.v. Show crossover or Harry Potter book universe with Stargate t.v. show crossover.

There are over 41,490 Harry Potter Fanfiction stories available. Of these, you then click on more customizable settings (out pops a list of things non Harry Potter like Doctor Who- about 1,168 stories, How I met your Mother—4 stories, Beast Master-1 story, etc). From there, you have different types of filters. You can include and exclude pairings, you can have two genres, you can filter by language, and you can choose from ratings K – M (for more on ratings and fanfiction disambiguation, refresh this later today).

My favorite way to find fanfiction is to filter through “most comments” & “most favorites”. People usually write comments when they love something and when something is horrible. You can ell when something is written well.

Sometimes I read ongoing fics, but they leave me in anticipation of when the next chapter will be posted. For example, there is a fic I am following that hasn’t updated since January (The Savior, Child of the Tardis, Son of a Madman by Kuroi In a Black Hole), a few that will never be updates again because they have been abandoned, and one that will never be  completed because the author died.

Each story you read give you a little look inside of someone’s head. Things you find interesting help you connect with these people you have never met. These “likes” give you common ground. I have read a ton of  fanfiction over the years. Some I have read simply because I enjoyed one of the author’s stories.  I have then gone through the rest of the things they have written only to then go through their favorites list & so on.

You will find, that certain stories will continue to pop up. When a story that seems uninteresting to you continues to pop up in lists, you will  look. Sometimes you regret not having read the fic before.

BINGE: HBO’s Game of Thrones: Season 2

This was posted on Patreon : Jul 17 at 8:00pm
This Show has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%, a score of 9/10 on TV.com, & a 9.5 /10 on IMDb.

Binge: Short period of time devoted to indulging to excess.

Game of Thrones: A Drama show on HBO based on novels by George R.R. Martin.

HBO: HOME BOX OFFICE is an American company that is a satellite t.v. network, & provides premium cable. The network is known for explicit & controversial content. Also, instead of passing commercials for, say, deodorant, they show behind the scene content and promote other HBO shows.

This review will be done as though there are no books. This will be as short opinion piece strictly about the show. This will not be a comparison piece or a “they should have” piece. I will be do a piece where I dissect the execution of the novels once Game of Thrones has run it’s course.

No spoilers.

Season 2 flowed into season 3 very well. I went to pause an episode while lamenting being unable to finish up the season, I realized I was in season 3. Season 2 blended very well with season 3. Season 1 & 2 felt clunky between the season finale and the first episode.

Season 2 has a lot of buildup with almost no pay out. A few chess pieces were moved around, I’m sure they are leading somewhere good, but it might still be a slow burn yet. The show does well with the time skips (though you wouldn’t notice them if they weren’t mentioned or if you are unaware how long travel took in the middle ages). Favorite character was The Acting Hand of the King. The biggest thing this season is that magic is  “back” in the world. Seeing what that entails id interesting.

This film revolutionized anime. It was the first to prerecord dialogue, i a time when animation would stay still and the mouth would move. The lines were recorded, then the animation was made, to match the words. The film even used computer generated imagery to outline where falling debri would be and  help animation bes fluid.
The visuals linger in your mind. This is considered one of the greatest movies of all time. It was a film ahead of its time. The animation, to this day, is superb. This film greatly influenced modern films (animated and live action), t.v., & anime around the globe. The beginning, well, it alone had not been seen before. Wondering what modern film was greatly influenced by AKIRA? The Matrix, for one.
I have watched this film many times over the years. Every time I watch it I am immediately immersed. Something I love about the film is that each time I watch it, reactions seem real, the background (buildings and lights) have real world lighting – oh my. My favorite non-main character is the waitress.
You may need to watch this film  couple of times to understand what is going on.

Article #1: CRUNCHYROLL

“Crunchyroll started as a passion project that I created with my buddies from Berkeley (Go Bears). It’s grown to a global streaming platform that brings Japanese anime and drama to millions of fans around the world. By partnering with the leading Asian content creators, we’re able to bring the most popular series…to millions of fans internationally.”
~Kun Gao, the Co-Founder and CEO of Crunchyroll, ( written on Reddit 2+ years ago)
—————————————-
Crunchyroll was founded by graduates from the University of California, Berkeley in 2006. Crunchyroll hosts over 20 million users world wide, with over 1 million of those being paid subscribers. “Crunchy,” as Crunchyroll is often shortened to, by users, started out as a for profit video upload & streaming site. Unlicensed fan subbed versions of shows were uploaded by users for other users of the site. It is now a legal distributor that is committed to hosting only content with legitimate distribution rights.
There are over 950 shows available, with over 8,000 hours of officially licensed content available in multiple languages.
At home, we have “Crunchyroll Premium.” This means we have access to shows minutes (sometimes an hour, sometimes a couple of days) after they air in Japan with no ads, in High Definition quality. Shows are, generally, available an hour after they air. Their library (what is available through them) contains anime, manga, & dramas. There are three membership options, Free ($0.00 a month), Premium ($6.95 a month), & Premium+ ($11.95). I find Premium to be enough.
The downsides of Crunchyroll are few, but they can be quite annoying. Sometimes show lists take up to 10 minutes to load. Sometimes Crunchyroll is down on Premium (nothing will load) but is available on the free version, but then we have to deal with commercials – and sometimes the commercials freeze, so they take, what feels like forever. Sometimes both Free & Premium won’t load, even after they have been exited, or uninstalled, then reinstalled, & signed back into. Sometimes you have to exit the app completely then log back in to scroll through shows, then repeat when you want the next episode & it won’t load. We keep using it though. It has the shows as they air in Japan, & there are few things we enjoy more than fresh content that is good.
Not all anime is going to be your type of anime. To find out what you like, watch it all, at least a bit of each show. Sometimes the first episode won’t hook you, but the 3rd one will. Sometimes it is all bad, but you watch until the end anyway (Why I have done , I like to call optimism.) & then go nuts asking yourself ‘why, ‘ while you go over everything that was bad in excruciating detail in your head and out loud to someone else who watched the show. Just because a friend liked a show, that doesn’t mean you will.
A recent show that was worth watching through until the end and had a great pay out ending, for me, was ‘Coffin Princess Chaika’. Conversely, a recent show I found to be terrible and unsatisfying, but I watched every agonizingly bad episode of was ‘Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World’.

ANIME SUMMER PICKS OF THE WEEK

Jul 16 at 8:00am
This week was another one filled with summer premiers on Crunchyroll. Of the new shows that came out, I found four to have stood out above the rest! There are five shows in the picture, you say? Yes, well, one has been top on my list of summer anime since it came out. I just have to include it on my anime watch list (Knight’s & Magic). Surprisingly, ¾ shows are slice of life with no magic.

Check out out “Crunchyroll Pick of the the week” to read more about Knight’s & Magic: https://www.patreon.com/posts/review-3-of-week-12802158

Top Premiers of the week:

1. Gamers!

⭐ ⭐ ⭐

I want to see how this plays out. It could, easily go bad. So far it is pretty entertaining. Perfect for anyone who has ever been terrible in social situations and knows what it is like to keep your cool on the outside while freaking out on the inside. Also,  have you ever thought you found people with similar interests only to find they are way more intense than you? Then you may just find this entertaining. *slice of life*

2. Classroom of the Elite

⭐ ⭐ ⭐

I want to see how this unfolds. Interpersonal relationships & human character analysis play a big part. This is an intense show that could turn into a favorite. The protagonist isn’t driven to do anything, but he is obviously capable. He seems like a reasonable & well adjusted guy who puts in as much effort as is required and has a good moral compass. So far, he is no hero though. *slice of life*

3. Angel’s 3Piece

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

A male high school shut in, three lollis, a church, wonderfully rendered animation and pleasant music. Yaasss. This is perfect for anyone who loves music and for whoever wants to watch a show centered around young people who love music. Perfect for a music & instrument buff.

4. In Another World With My Smartphone

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

OP protagonist who is kind & rational, with God intervention, reincarnation, magic, & implied harem story line. This is definitely not for anyone who lacks a sense of humor or is part of the conservative religious right. Also, ice cream!

_______________________

I first found out about this little shop while walking to Jack in the Box with my boyfriend last year. There was an ad for a sushi restaurant coming soon. We wondered what the food would taste like. We are fortunate enough to live in an area full of sushi options. One this block alone there were 2 restaurants (at the time). I, then promptly forgot about it on our walk home.

About 4 months later, I came home to new delicious food. My boyfriend had seen that the restaurant was open the week before & decided to swing by. We were both surprised. At the time, there was a special of 8 pieces of California rolls for $2.99. This became my go to item. They were so good I didn’t want to try anything else for quite a while. The next thing I tried was Udon, then the spam musubi, then, well, by then I was hooked. I’m sure I was hooked long before this, but this is when there was no going back to not having this food at least one time a month, sometimes two times a week.

Placing your order:

Sometimes ordering takes forever. Sometimes we call up to 7 times before someone picks up. We usually place our order on the drive home from two cities away (15 minute drive) & pick it up right on time or with enough time to sit and read a chapter of fanfiction (or ½ a chapter, depends on the author’s length, really). If you are told your order will be ready in 5 minutes, but you are 20 minutes away, let the person taking your order know. They will wait to make your food so it will be ready just as you arrive or very shortly before you arrive. Optimum freshness is very important to the chef, it is part of the experience. The food is always worth the wait.

Food best enjoyed:

The best place to eat your food is anywhere comfortable or pleasant. I have eaten my food alone, wrapped in a blanket, with the light off, while watching an anime. I have eaten at a table with my boyfriend while sharing some of what is on one another’s plates (trying new menu items). We have enjoyed the food while we picnicked at the park on a clear day, under a shady tree, on my fluffy red blanket. Basically, what is comfortable and pleasant is up to you. Whatever comfortable is to you, I invite you to try out the food in this situation for optimal enjoyment.

My favorite dishes are:

Chicken Katsu Curry (with Jones vanilla soda)

Chicken Teriyaki Bento (with room temperature milk)

Sushi Tempura Combo Bento (with water)

This weekend I binged season one. I watched 8 episodes on Saturday and two on Sunday. At no point did I fall asleep or lose interest. From the start, the show had a good pace and flow. The characters felt fleshed out. Motives felt real. The set, the costumes, the hair, the makeup, and props were all wonderful.

The only issue I had with the show was the ages of the adults. Most people died young in the days of old. The ages of the actors seemed wrong. Example, a character who breast feeds her son who is no longer a baby, and who is quite mad, should not have been so old. Just as a male character became incapacitated from a chest wound, she should have died in childbirth. She is too old to have become pregnant and have had a child and lived. Everything else was rather believable.

I’ll binge Season 2 some time this month.

Review #3: CRUNCHYROLL FAVORITE OF THE WEEK: Knight’s Magic

Published on: Jul 9 at 7:00pm

The summer season began earlier this month, much to my delight. There are a few shows that seem interesting. Top on the list is the show Knight’s and Magic. This show deals with reality, parallel worlds, & reincarnation.

This show is perfect for those who like fantasy, magic, the middle ages, mechas, & assertive male protagonists.

What do I like? The protagonist is a precocious and intelligent white haired, assertive male, who is guided by his own moral compass, is fearless, & doesn’t have difficulty forming friendships. That’s it. That is the show. The world has a set of laws and the protagonist basically does things because “why not?” His cute factor helps. Sure, he jumps in blind, but it isn’t annoying (like Ash from Pokemon, or Tai from Digimon, or Rin Okuma from Blue Exorcist). He jumps in blind because he reincarnated into another world and remembers his past life in modern day Earth. He has no fear of death. It helps that he isn’t a “chosen one” though. He doesn’t do things out of any type of obligation.

Review #2: Live Production: Marvel Universe Live – How does the show compare to the description?

Published on Patreon: Jul 8 at 8:00pm
Marvel’s Universe Live’s website has the following description about the show:

“MARVEL FANS, ASSEMBLE! BE IMMERSED IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE & WITNESS IT ALL WITH YOUR FAMILY, LIVE!

Prepare  for an action-packed, legendary battle to defend the universe from  evil. Spider-Man, the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy join  forces with Doctor Strange, master of the mystic arts, in a race against  time to recover the Wand of Watoomb before it falls into Loki’s hands.

This ancient artifact holds  immeasurable mystical power and would allow Loki to achieve his eternal quest to crown himself ruler of Asgard and Earth.

MARVEL’S MIGHTIEST HEROES – SPIDER-MAN, IRON MAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA, THOR, BLACK PANTHER, HULK, BLACK WIDOW, AND THE GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY unite to defeat Loki in his quest to gain control of the Wand of Watoomb.”

https://www.marveluniverselive.com/

—————————————————————–

The show delivers on the description. It is definitely family friendly. There is magic, mayhem, and marvelous stunts. The stage hands do a wonderful job with the scene changes, the stunt people/actors kept pace with the voice actors/ recordings, & the graphics were pretty wonderful. If you have sensitivity to light, you may find some key parts painful or annoying.

I went in a group of 5 (ages 25 – 29) to watch the premier, yesterday 7-7-17, at the STAPLES CENTER. Parking was found quickly, a block away, and was only $10.00. Finding our seats was not a hassle. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience. I recommend this to anyone who is a fan of Marvel & or theatre, to those who are kids at heart, & to anyone who loves to see practical effects on a large scales. My favorite part was when the car disappeared.
